What is Myopia?

Myopia—also known as nearsightedness—is a common vision condition that makes it difficult to see faraway objects.

Left untreated, myopia can worsen over time and increase the risk of developing serious eye conditions later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts, all of which can lead to blindness. With routine eye exams, we can detect myopia in its early stages to provide corrective treatments.

Myopia has no cure, but there are ways to manage it effectively and slow its progression.

Myopia Causes & Symptoms

The exact cause of myopia is unknown, but hereditary and environmental factors are said to play a role. Your child may have myopia if they’re experiencing these symptoms:

  • Faraway objects look blurry, while close objects are seen clearly
  • Holding an object close to the face
  • Headaches
  • Eye strain
  • Squinting
  • Poor academic performance

Myopia Management

The first step to diagnosing myopia is performing a comprehensive eye exam. After confirming your child’s diagnosis, we’ll measure their axial length–the distance between the front and back of their eye–to determine the extent of their myopia. We’ll also use corneal topography to map out the cornea’s curvature and identify abnormalities that could be contributing.

Our dedicated team will work with you, the parent, to determine the most appropriate treatment or combination of treatments and schedule regular check-ins. Treatment training and educational resources will also be provided.

Why Measuring Axial Length Matters

Always aiming high to provide the best care for patients, Lifetime Optometric is one of the few optometric practices in Fresno to offer this test that measures the axial length of the eye.

The axial length measures the distance between the front surface of the eye to the back of the eye. Children that are nearsighted will have a longer eye than normal.

It is a quick but an important test that will help assess the risk for progression and for monitoring treatment of myopia.

Myopia Treatment Options

Treating your child’s myopia involves correcting corneal abnormalities to slow its progression and improve their vision.

Some treatments may be better suited for your child than others, depending on the condition’s extent and comfort levels.

We will work alongside you to determine the best course of treatment.

MiSight contact lenses are designed to correct refractive errors and slow myopia progression in children aged 8-12. Unlike regular contact lenses, MiSight uses a dual-focus design to correct nearsightedness and induce peripheral defocus, which prevents the growth of the eyeball that causes myopia. By slowing down this growth, MiSight not only helps prevent myopia from worsening but also reduces the risk of eye complications later in life.

Ortho-k are special contact lenses worn overnight. The lenses are designed to gently reshape the cornea while your child is asleep to correct their vision. Ortho-k can be a good option for children who are uncomfortable with wearing glasses or contact lenses during the day.

Atropine eye drops can help slow down myopia progression by temporarily paralyzing the ciliary muscle, which is responsible for focusing the eye.
